i) Provincial Geomatics Strategy
CIG-NL has played an active role in the development of a geomatics strategy for the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. This strategy focuses not only on the opportunities for government and industry, but on the considerable potential geomatics has to offer in the areas of socio-economic and human resource development.
ii) Education:
To our knowledge, the CIG is the only geomatics organization in Canada with a mandate to raise public awareness and understanding of the field of geomatics. To this end, we have been targeting the public schools in the province in an effort to ensure that our young people are fully informed of the full range of career opportunities in the field of geomatics.
Preliminary discussions have been held with the College of the North Atlantic (CAN) regarding a CIG Student Awards Night. Response has been positive and detailed planning is in the early stages. Similar discussions are ongoing with regard to a ‘brown bag’ session with students of the Geomatics Engineering Technology program at CNA. Efforts have been made to engage the Department of Geography at Memorial University in similar initiatives. Please stay tuned to this web site for more details.
iii) Networking:
CIG-NL has sponsored and organized the provincial ‘geographic information’ (GI) series of events since 1998. Held every two years, the GI series brings together geomatics practitioners and policy makers from across the province in a relaxed, informative and productive environment. Please refer to the event web site at www.cig-nl.net for details concerning the most recent GI event.
The Branch also assumed responsibility for sponsoring and organizing Geomatics Atlantic events in Newfoundland in 1998 and 2002. These events each attracted some 200 delegates and 20 exhibitors from Atlantic Canada and elsewhere. Geomatics Atlantic 2005 will be held in Nova Scotia. Stay tuned to www.geomaticsatlantic.com for conference details.
In addition to conferences, the Branch has plans to sponsor a public lecture series. At each lecture an invited speaker will speak on a topic relevant to geomatics or the application of geomatics. Every effort will be made to ensure that these presentations are suitable for both the layperson and geomatics professional. Volunteers from other CIG branches are welcome! Discussions are presently underway with the organizers of Carto 2005 (http://www.cca-acc.org/conference-2005.htm) to organize a public lecture in concert with this event. |
